World Book Day
Barn Owls had a wonderful time on World Book Day dressing up as their favourite characters. Don’t they all look wonderful!
Term 3 Spellings
Battle of the Beaks
As an introduction to our science topic Evolution and Inheritance, Barn Owls took part in a battle of the beaks. We had discussed Charles Darwin’s voyage on HMS Beagle to the Galapagos Islands and his discoveries about different species of finches. Depending on the type of seed the finches fed on led to different beak shapes for survival. We learnt about the theory of evolution and to demonstrate this we used different equipment to pick up different food items in 30 seconds. We discovered that the different equipment was suitable to types of food. The children enjoyed eating the food at the end of the experiment!
Oracle Bones
As part of our history topic on the Shang Dynasty, we have been learning about the Oracle bones and how they were used to help forecast, amongst other things, when to plant the crops. The children carefully carved their own Oracle bones using clay and writing in an ancient Chinese script.
Year 5 Multi Skills
Year 5 enjoyed taking part in multi-skills at Warneford School. They joined in with eleven different activities run by Year 9 pupils and were placed into teams with other Year 5 children from St Leonards and Southfields. The children worked well in their teams and were a credit to Westrop School.
Bread Baking
The classroom smelled amazing this week to the aroma of freshly baked bread. The children proved to be naturals at making and kneading dough, and it wasn’t long (well after a bit of time for rising) that we were able to shape the dough into rolls. The wonderful ladies in the kitchen baked the bread and everyone went home with a freshly baked roll for their tea. I hope everyone enjoyed them!
Awesome Author Visit!
Year 5 and 6 recently had the opportunity to visit Warneford for an utterly hilarious talk by author Steve Cole. Steve, author of books such as World Burn Down and the Young Bond series, spoke about his love of inventing unusual scenarios in his head and showed how these can develop into stories. Barn Owls represented the school brilliantly, asked some super questions and children who had bought a book got the chance to get it signed. From monsters and dinosaurs to dinner ladies and dra-cucumbers, Westrop were definitely inspired by his imagination and can’t wait to use some of his advice in our next stories!

Visit to Steam
We had a wonderful time visiting the Steam Museum for our We’ll meet again WW2 experience day. We were met off the bus by a member of the Home Guard and he took us to our first activity which was experiencing some time in an air raid shelter. We then went on a quiz where we had to look carefully at propaganda posters and find the missing words. After that it was time to learn about the roles of trains during the war. Being a train driver or a fireman, we learned, was a reserved occupation. Finally, we re-enacted being evacuated out to the countryside. We were all sent to live safely away from the big city. We were extremely proud of the behaviour and manners of all the children throughout the day – well done Barn Owls!
Electricity game
As part of our topic on electricity, we made a game that links to our history topic of WW2. We created a quiz where pictures and answers were muddled on the front of the card then hid some metallic strips behind linking the correct picture to the correct answer. If the player was right then when attached to a simple circuit, the bulb would light up.
