Kestrel Class

Year 6

Welcome letter Kestrel

Biscuit Packaging Project

In DT this term, Kestrels have been researching, designing, and making their own biscuit packaging. We started by researching different biscuit packaging on the market. In our Maths lesson we learnt about nets and had a go at making some with our partners. When we had chosen the shape of our packaging, it was time to design it. As this term’s host country is Egypt, we designed our own Egyptian themed packaging; lots of us chose to use a pyramid shape. Finally, we made some butter biscuits to go inside our packaging- yum!

Exploring Craters

In Science this week, Kestrels have been creating their own investigations where they have explored craters and what might affect their size. As a group they chose their own research question and decided how to carry out and record their investigation using the resources available: marbles, flour and rulers.

Year 6 SATs

The Presentation for Year 6 SATS is available here if you missed the meeting in school.

Gymnastics

Kestrel Class have been looking at gymnastics as part of our PE. We have been working on our rolls, balances, and the different shapes we can make with our bodies. We have had some fantastic solo and partner work taking place.

Kestrel Class - Gymnastics

Gymnastic Visitor

While looking at gymnastics, we have been lucky to have a visit from a Team GB tumbler. Jaydon Paddock came and spoke to us about his experiences as a gymnast with a focus on setting yourself high expectations in order to achieve. We also got to see some fantastic flips before taking part in some circuit training.

The Moon (science)

In Science this term we are looking at the Earth and Space,  we then made the phases of the moon to help us with our learning about why the moon appears to change shape. It’s not often you can eat the results of a science lesson!

Christmas DT

In DT last term, Kestrel class have been busy making Christmas Stockings. After spending some time looking at a Victorian Christmas, year 6 designed and made their own stockings. They worked incredibly hard to add applique designs onto their stockings including a topper and a toe design just like they would have been during the Victorian times.

An art explosion

To start off this term, Kestrel class have been looking at the artist Roy Lichtenstein. They studied his work and learnt about how his art wasn't an instant hit in the art world. After looking at his techniques, the children drew their own portraits before using the Ben Day dot technique to add that recognisable pop art style.

Music

As part of our music this term, Kestrel class have been learning to play the clarinets. We have learnt how to build our clarinets and the names of all the different pieces and we are now starting to learn to play some notes. A very tuneful start to the term.
