Year 5 Multi-Skills
Year 5 enjoyed taking part in multi-skills at Warneford School. They joined in with eleven different activities run by Year 9 pupils and were placed into teams with other Year 5 children from St Leonards and Southfields. The children worked well in their teams and were a credit to Westrop School.
Battle of the Beaks!
In Science, to start our topic Evolution and Inheritance, Kites took part in a battle of beaks! We discussed Charles Darwin’s voyage to the Galapagos Islands and his discoveries about the different beaks of the Galapagos finches. We learnt about the theory of evolution and how species can adapt to their surroundings over many, many years. To demonstrate we had a variety of different foods and used 4 different pieces of equipment to pick up as many items as possible in 30 seconds. We found that the equipment which imitated the smaller, weaker beaks found it very difficult to pick up larger pieces of food. After battle- while taste testing a few of the foods- we discussed the fact that different areas of the islands had different foods for the finches which meant that the birds in these areas had evolved to have beaks best suited to retrieve their particular food.
Awesome Author Visit!
Year 5 and 6 recently had the opportunity to visit Warneford for an utterly hilarious talk by author Steve Cole. Steve, author of books such as World Burn Down and the Young Bond series, spoke about his love of inventing unusual scenarios in his head and showed how these can develop into stories. Kites represented the school brilliantly, asked some super questions and children who had bought a book got the chance to get it signed. From monsters and dinosaurs to dinner ladies and dra-cucumbers, Westrop were definitely inspired by his imagination and can’t wait to use some of his advice in our next stories!

All Things Bread!
In our DT unit this term, Kites were introduced to our new unit: bread. In our first lesson, we carried out a taste testing session where we had the opportunity to taste different bread products, from bagels to naan bread. We gave our opinion on the taste, texture and appearance of the products and researched the origin of the different types of bread. What a delicious start to the term!
Following this, we carried out a survey into the amount of bread people in our class eat on a day-to-day basis and used our Computing skills to produce graphs to show our results.

Cooking Up a Storm!
After taste testing and market research, it was time for us to bake! We started by making a basic bread roll recipe. Working in groups, we weighed, mixed and kneaded before leaving our doughs to prove. Once we had shaped them into rolls, they were baked and we could take them home to taste. Yum!

World War II trip
We had a great day out at the Steam museum where we got to experience life in World War II. The children enjoyed sharing what they had learnt in their topic and also learning and seeing new things. They learnt about the roles of women during the war where they bravely took on the roles of a family and discussed how life changed for them. We also looked at the importance of trains during the war before hoping to be selected during our evacuation experience. Finally, we looked at the air raid and spent some time in a shelter to experience what it would have been like during the war. The children really enjoyed the hands-on experience of the trip. We are very proud of their excellent manners during the trip. Well done, Kites!
Forest School
We have been loving our forest school sessions so far this term- from cutting wood and knife skills to den building and hammock swinging!

World War 2
In our WW2 topic this term, we have been learning about the events that led up to the start of the war. As part of this we have looked at the leaders of the Axis and Allies. Working as a team, we had the challenge of matching the photo, name and facts about each leader and then seeing the similarities and differences we can find between them all. Great work Kites!
Art-Henry Moore
As a starting to art this term, we have been looking at the artist Henry Moore. The children enjoyed looking at his sculptures before turning their attention to the art which he was commissioned to make during the war. During this lesson, they have been creating Henry Moore sketch book pages.
Reflections
This week we have been looking at reflection in Science. After discussing how reflection occurs off every surface, we then applied what we learnt into an investigation. The children were looking at how reflection could be used in World War II to help see the enemy around corners and over barriers.
