With a few changes to the line-up Westrop made the short journey to Blunsdon to play St Leonards. In an entertaining well fought game Westrop ended up winning 3-1. The first half saw both sides having an even share of possession but Westrop were creating the better chances. Tommy and Harry were constant threat but we couldn`t find the breakthrough, in defence Lilly and Theo worked well together to stop any attacks with Jacob looking very assured in goal. At the end of the first half St Leonards took the lead after winning the ball close to our goal and gave Jacob no chance with the finish. Westrop kept their heads up and equalised almost immediately after a great move involving most of the team, Freddie squeezed a shot underneath their goal keeper. The half ended 1-1.

In the 2nd half Westrop used the slope to their advantage and quickly went ahead with a smart finish by Harry. Not longer after the tireless Tommy ran past several players and slotted into the net to put Westrop 3-1 ahead. The rest of the half saw Westrop unable to add to their tally despite numerous chances, St Leonards kept plugging away and we had to keep working hard to keep them at bay. The game ended 3-1 to Westrop and the win was very much down to working as a team and their attitude, showing a real togetherness. A special mention to Noah who played his first match out on pitch who got better and better as the game went on.

On a cold wet afternoon Westrop travelled to St Francis to take on a team that were sitting 2nd in the table.  Westrop started brightly passing the ball about nicely and creating a few half chances. As the half wore Westrop began to get more and more on top cutting through their opponents regularly with some smart football, but everything they threw at St Frances was repelled by their defence or by their excellent goal keeper. St Francis were a threat themselves on the break catching Westrop over committing a few times, but the ever reliable Lilly was on hand to snuff out any danger. Just before the break Westrops pressure told when a long throw from Toby landed at Josh`s feet who calmed himself before smashing a left footed shot into the top corner. The half ended with Westrop a goal ahead.

The 2nd half started continuing in the same vein with Westrop attacking but St Francis being very quick to counter attack. The equaliser came after St Francis broke up a Westrop attack and quickly moved the ball forward to score a well worked goal with a smart first time finish. Westrop continued to press forcing the St Francis keeper into a string of saves, unfortunately after a defensive mix up St Francis went ahead. The rest of the game saw Westrop desperately trying to find an equaliser but to no avail. At the end of a very entertaining game which was a credit to both sides it ended 2-1 to St Francis, Westrop can consider themselves very unlucky not to have come away with at least a point.

Player of the match – Lilly (very disciplined)

A good start to the New Year with a resounding 6-1 win. The first 5 minutes was an even affair with a few half chances for either team. Jacob was forced into a couple of smart saves to prevent Haydonleigh opening the scoring. As the half wore on Westrop began to take control and after great long pass by Rory set Arthur free down the left he crossed for Tommy to tap in at the far post to put Westrop into the lead. Westrop continued to press and before long were 2-0 up after a clever lobbed pass from Toby put Arthur in on goal and he finished into the corner. Toby then got himself a goal with a well struck shot into the bottom corner. It wasn`t all one way traffic as Haydonleigh were launching a few attacks of their own, but these were snuffed out by the Westrop defence or Jacob in goal. Just before the end of the first half another great long ball from Rory put Freddie clean through on goal, his shot was parried by the keeper only into Tommy`s path who finished to put Westrop 4 – 0 up at the break.

The 2nd half was a bit more even with both teams searching for the next goal, The next goal came through some good build up play by Westrop finding Tommy out wide and with some clever footwork he cut in and finished from a tight angle. Josh then put Westrop 6 – 0 up rifling in a shot from the edge of the box. Just before the final whistle Westrop were caught over committing in attack and Haydonleigh broke away and scored to make the final score Haydonleigh 1 Westrop 6.

A good win for Westrop especially as we had to go with just the minimum 7 players due to illness and unavailability. The match started in the best possible way as we took the lead after 1 min, some good build up play resulted in a shot from Harry being parried into the path of Tommy who drilled a shot into the top corner of the net. Another good passing move 5 minutes later ended up with Harry smartly finishing into the bottom corner. With Westrop continuing to dominate a great through ball from Toby sent Harry clean through and he comfortably put Westrop 3-0 ahead. The rest of the half continued with Westrop on top creating numerous chances and any odd attack from Orchid Vale being snuffed out by Toby and Lilly at the back, Noah in goal being rarely troubled. Just before half time Harry completed his hat trick with a very smart finish from close range to put Westrop 4-0 up at the break.

After being warned at half time not to ease up or become too individualistic Westrop did exactly that and from a well struck free kick Orchid Vale pulled a goal back. This prompted Westrop back into action and quickly replied with a goal of their own after another slick move saw Theo put Tommy in on goal who placed his shot past the goal keeper. Westrop kept creating chances at a regular intervals and this pressure told when Tommy completed his hat trick with a clever left foot finish. As the game neared the end Orchid Vale were awarded a penalty after a rash challenge. The resulting penalty hit the post and went to safety. Not long after that the game came to an end with Westrop winning 6-1.

In a tough start to the season Westrop succumbed to a very strong and skilful Catherine Wayte team. For the first 5 mins Westrop had to withstand a lot of pressure but thanks to some good goal keeping from Noah and last ditch defending they managed to keep the game scoreless. As the half wore on Westrop started to create some chances of their own with a couple of nice passing moves providing a couple of good chances to open the scoring. Despite this Cathrine Wayte were always a threat and nearing the end of the 1st half they broke away from a Westrop corner and deservedly took the lead. The half ended 1-0 to Catherine Wayte.

The 2nd half continued with Catherine Wayte in the ascendancy with the odd chance here and there for Westrop. Catherine Wayte scored a well worked goal to go 2-0 up and from then on Westrop looked disjointed and as the half wore on they conceded another 3 goals to win convincingly 5-0.

Man of The Match – Noah (a string of great saves)

An improved performance from Westrop who can count themselves unlucky not to get anything from the game. The game started in the worst possible fashion after a defensive mix up gifted Oakhurst the opening goal. Westrop recovered well and had good spells of pressure but unable to really create any clear cut opportunities. Jacob in goal for the first time made some good saves for Westrop.  With the game evenly matched Oakhurst scored a 2nd . Despite this Westrop continued to press but unfortunately another mix up gave Oakhurst a flattering 3-0 lead at half time. Westrop came out confidently in the 2nd half and proceeded to have majority of possession and chances. Eventuality the pressure paid off and Westrop pulled one back with Harry slotting home after the goalkeeper saved Josh`s initial shot. It was too little too late though and the game ended 3-1 to Oakhurst. Westrop would feel they should have got something from the game but they only had themselves to blame by giving away 2 goals.

Man of the match – Theo (composed and created quite a few chances)

In our best performance so far we lost in a competitive game to last season’s cup winners. Westrop started brightly pressing Covingham back with Toby being unlucky with a shot from distance was tipped onto the post by the opposing goalkeeper. The 1st half continued with Westrop enjoying the majority of possession but Covingham were a threat on the break but the Westrop defence snuffed out any danger. The score remained goalless at half time.

Within 5 minutes of the 2nd half Westrop found themselves 2-0 down due to one defensive mix up and an unfortunate own goal. Despite this their heads did not drop and they continued to peg Covingham back with Harry striking the post with a fine shot. Sadly it was not to be and the game ended 2-0 to Covingham.

Man of the Match – Toby (tireless in defence & attack)

Tag Rugby Tournament

Year 3 and 4 children went to Lydiard Park Academy to take part in a Tag Rugby tournament. The team of 8 pupils had been practicing for months at an after school club with Miss Corsan. We had 3 games to play and won spectacularly in the first two and came 2nd overall in our group. It was a lovely day and the children showed great sportsmanship and teamwork in order to score the tries and have fun. They all received a certificate for taking part.

Choir were able to meet a few times in the summer term.
