Physical Education
What are we trying to achieve through our Physical Education curriculum? (Intent)
At Westrop Primary and Nursery School all we do is underpinned by our strong vision and values. Our vision and values support our ‘Curriculum Drivers’ which offer golden threads throughout our curriculum and ensure we have clear drivers for all that we want to achieve for our children.

In PE, our intent is to support each child to build confidence in their sporting and fitness ability. Through the lessons within a term, they have opportunities to build on their previous learning and develop new skills. They are also provided the opportunity to learn vital life skills, through communication and leadership exercises. There are also opportunities for each child to gain experiences they may not have had previously through our Forest School provision. With the use of OPAL during playtimes and lunchtime, we also intend for the children to have an opportunity to take more responsibility for themselves. |

In PE, our intent is to use PE to build each other up with the use of positive teamwork and supportive communication. We provide opportunities to show good sportsmanship to each other through competitive team games. We provide a safe, nurturing environment, where all children of all ability can build and develop their skills, while supporting each other. In our OPAL provision, we also provide a safe space for our children to relax and reflect. |

In PE, our intent is to be able to push all children to achieve skilled objectives and beyond. We use differentiation within a lesson to support or enhance those who need it. Children learn skills from a variety of games and skills to develop their skills. We provide an environment where children feel comfortable to challenge themselves, be it a new skill or pushing their ability further. Our Forest School also provides the children with opportunities to challenge themselves in scenarios unfamiliar to them. |

In PE, our intent is to provide a positive environment, where the children can be competitive while providing good sportsmanship. We participate in a good range of inter-school competitions and ensure the children know what it is to represent our school. We also have good relationships with different local professional and semi-professional clubs, with some coming into school to provide assemblies and after school clubs that inspire children. |

In PE, we want to ensure that children can communicate well with each other in a variety of ways. In line with our values, we ensure that all children participating in a competitive game, play honestly and with respect. We allow the children to build these core values through our use of games and PE lessons. In PE, we ensure that all children have a voice, whether in a team setting or a leadership role. PE is much more than just testing and developing children’s sporting ability and we provide these building blocks in our PE lessons. |
How is the Physical Education Curriculum delivered? (Implementation)
Pupils at Westrop are exposed to a variety of physical educational opportunities. We offer a mixture of hour-long PE lessons, normally twice a week, or a bi-termly two hour Forest School session. All of KS2 (Y3-Y6) also attend swimming lessons throughout the year. Our OPAL playtimes & lunchtimes also offer the children the opportunity to remain active during their breaks, as well as developing their problem solving, communication and overall enjoyment for being active. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and skills to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance, and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. Our well-being focus we provide through a qualified yoga instructor & our forest school provision. Children at Westrop will take part in a range of active lessons to raise their fitness levels and cognitive ability. They will have the opportunity to gain expertise from qualified coaches and teachers. The teachers’ enthusiasm for being active will encourage all our children to lead an active lifestyle. Children will learn about healthy eating and the importance of a balanced diet through PSHE lessons as well as the effect of certain foods on the body in science.
What difference is the Physical Education Curriculum making? (Impact)
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Westrop, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes.
Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness.
Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
Our impact is shown through good sportsmanship at internal and external events and children understanding that everyone can contribute to a team’s efforts.
Our children will be fitter and enjoy being active more from being shown a range of sports and activities that they can continue to participate in for the rest of their lives.
They will learn how to compete fairly and take pride in their achievements and efforts even if they do not win.

How can I support my child in PE?
There are lots of activities you can do around the house that will help develop your child’s coordination, balance and fitness. You can ask them to ‘walk the plank’ as if they were a pirate or move round the garden as if they were different animals. Going for a walk or scooter/bike ride is a great way to be active, as is going up and down your stairs at home. There is a multitude of websites and videos for children to have a go at.
