Dive into Modern Foreign Languages at Westrop

At Westrop we teach a variety of languages through our Host Country and Erasmus+ project. In Key Stage 1 children: answer the register, say please and thank you and learn simple phrases. In Key Stage 2 we teach Spanish each week as our modern foreign language.
The cultural and traditional aspects of the countries link into our International curriculum.

About the Scheme of Work

The Speekee scheme of work has been specially designed to provide a comprehensive Spanish language learning resource that is:

  • Flexible and adaptable: the lesson plans and activities can be adapted to the needs of different learners, depending on age, ability and previous experience of learning Spanish or another modern foreign language.
  • Easy to use: the materials have been set out in a way that will ensure teachers can select and access the appropriate lesson plans and activities – including the resources needed to carry these out – in a user-friendly way that will save time.
  • Children present the vocabulary in the videos and our pupils enjoy seeing inside real Spanish homes with real Spanish children

The Westrop School curriculum for Spanish aims:

  • to create a balance between preparing children for the requirements of secondary school and providing pleasurable learning activities
  • to provide fun, creative learning experiences, where possible and appropriate, as we believe that children engage more deeply in learning when it is engaging
  • to provide children with exposure to authentic material, including menus, holiday brochures, video clips, target language books
  • to foster transferable knowledge, skills and attributes. These include working memory ,strategies for remembering language, resilience and problem-solving whereby children are encouraged to work out language and grammar rules for themselves
  • to create cultural awareness, whilst recognising and valuing similarities with, and differences between, other cultures and languages
  • to create cross-curricular learning opportunities, where possible and appropriate (Art, Maths, English)
  • to promote accuracy/competence/fluency in English as well as Spanish
  • to develop all four MFL skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, with a focus on speaking and listening in KS2
  • to ensure that lesson content is accessible to all learners, regardless of background, status and ability .

 

 

Westrop MFL Intent report

Intention

The intention of the Spanish curriculum at Westrop Primary School is that children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We encourage children’s confidence and creative skills. We strive to stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language. We help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries. We strive to embed the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to enable children to use and apply their Spanish learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning. We aim to develop childrens’ oracy confidence and develop their presentation skills with the use of technology.

Implementation

Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. All our children in KS2 will have regular language lessons. Children watch and listen to real Spanish people and children speaking and learn about their culture through the use of videos and the specialist’s own experiences. Teachers stay in the lesson to help children learn and children enjoy seeing their adult learning at the same speed as them. Children enjoy the chance to perform their conversations from the age of 7 and Year 6s enjoy looking at popular songs from Spain and translating.

We have a Primary Spanish specialist teaching our weekly lessons. These focus primarily on Spanish. We use our own scheme of work based on progression from Lightbulb languages, Rockalingua and Speekee. Additionally, in year 3 and 4, children write a Christmas card to our Spanish link school. In year 5 and 6, children write a letter about themselves to older children at our link school in Spain. Annually, we have a Spanish speaking host country that all classes study and can learn some Spanish language. Teachers are encouraged to ask the children to respond to the register in Spanish and have table names as Spanish speaking cities or countries. Children throughout the school can learn some language through the Spanish noticeboard.

Impact

The learning challenges used, to plan and teach MFL, ensure that children are accessing work at age related expectations, with regular opportunities to be challenged through higher-level objectives. Children are assessed according to age related expectations in line with curriculum requirements. This is done in line with the school assessment calendar. This information is recorded and monitored by the co-ordinator. Children write one written piece per term as well as the work that is sent to our Spanish link school. By Year 6 children will all be able to have a conversation with several questions in Spanish. They will be able to recall vocabulary from several themes and use these in written work and conversation correctly.
